Advent 2018

Day 12. Zechariah’s praise

Advent 2018 - Day 12. Zechariah’s praise
Wednesday 12th December 2018

Luke 1:67-75

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: 68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

Zechariah’s liberty of spirit is expressed in this psalm of praise that recognises the great truth that God has come to save his people. This is a promise that goes right back to Abraham and shows how faithful God is to the covenant he made with his people Israel. These words are way beyond the realm of Zechariah's own understanding. These insights have been given him by the Holy Spirit and they remind us what God is always about—redemption, salvation and rescue. We are those who inherit all these great promises. We have just as much reason to praise God enthusiastically when we realise what God has done for us.

You have come to save your people and redeem them. Thank you, LORD, for the salvation-rescue that Christmas proclaims. You arrive in our world to fulfil ancient promises that uncover your unchanging commitment to bless. I praise you that through Jesus I can live an everyday life that’s touched by your holiness and goodness, free from fear. May that be so today!
