Advent 2018

Day 16. Jesus is born

Advent 2018 - Day 16. Jesus is born
Sunday 16th December 2018

Matthew 1:22-25

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

The plan of salvation that we are seeing unfold is intimately connected to the Old Testament, and events are happening in fulfilment of prophecies made long ago, such as that by the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14). Joseph is to be commended for his swift obedience in taking Mary to be his wife, and then when the child is born, to giving him the name Jesus. What a precious name that is! It means ‘Saviour’ for his work will be to provide salvation for the whole world from the curse of sin. God was sending his Son into the world that we might be saved. That is the good news this Christmas time. Don’t let it be forgotten in the midst of the hurly-burly.

God is with us – LORD, this astonishing, mind-bending truth underpins Joseph’s straight-forward trust in you. Today as I just get on with living life I pray that the wonder of knowing that God is with me through Jesus will never be far from my awareness.
