Advent 2018

Day 7. Mary visits Elizabeth

Advent 2018 - Day 7. Mary visits Elizabeth
Friday 7th December 2018

Luke 1:29-45

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!”

Mary’s instinctive response to her new situation is to go and seek comfort and counsel from her cousin Elizabeth, to hear what has happened to her, and to share what God is doing in her life as well. This kind of honest and open sharing is so helpful to spiritual growth. It perhaps comes more easily to women than it does to men, but we can all benefit from the kind of friendship we see at work here. For Mary there is a real confirmation that her pregnancy is indeed of God, and she is also commended for her faith. How important it is to encourage one another. Be the kind of person who is always encouraging others, and you will find you are encouraged too.

Thank you, LORD, that your work in me can be reflected in the experience of other believers. Thank you for the Holy Spirit’s encouragement through the words of others. This Christmas I want to be in a place to speak and receive words of faith and encouragement to others; Holy Spirit, please help me in this.

James. Now to live the life
The book we’re learning from this autumn term is James. Written by James, Jesus’ half-brother, it’s a small letter found in very last pages of the Bible
