Advent 2018

Day 8. Mary glorifies God (1)

Advent 2018 - Day 8. Mary glorifies God (1)
Saturday 8th December 2018

Luke 1:46-49

46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49     for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
    holy is his name.

This spontaneous burst of praise is known as The Magnificat (because the first word in Latin is ‘Magnificat’), and it is Mary’s attempt to put into words all that she feels at this moment. She is full of praise to God that she of all people, given her humble background, should have been chosen for such a special purpose. This song of praise comes from deep within her and is focussed on the greatness and goodness of God. It is a helpful discipline to pause and consider how God has worked in our own lives, and to use that as a springboard for our own song of praise. Let’s never take for granted the way God works in our lives. Let’s make sure there is always a song of praise on our lips, whatever our circumstances.

Thank you, LORD, that you the Mighty One have done great things for me. In the coming of Jesus you have become God, my Saviour. Please give me that overflowing joyful Spirit to celebrate your holy Name in my life today.

James. Now to live the life
The book we’re learning from this autumn term is James. Written by James, Jesus’ half-brother, it’s a small letter found in very last pages of the Bible
