Day 9. Mary glorifies God (2)

Advent 2018 - Day 9. Mary glorifies God (2)
Sunday 9th December 2018

Luke 1:50-56

50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Mary’s song now gives attention to the way God has worked in the history of his people, especially in the Old Testament. He has always been on the side of the poor, the humble, the needy; he has always been faithful to his promises to Abraham as well. Mary has the sense of being caught up in a plan and purpose that goes back to the very beginning of time, and she is right, for God’s plan of salvation was first revealed in the Garden of Eden when sin first entered the world. Her little story is part of God’s bigger story. This is a sense of perspective we can all share as we reflect on our salvation. And God remains the same too—merciful, faithful and caring.

Sovereign God, I marvel at your faithful acts of mercy and rescue through generations of history reaching into my life. Thank you for the breadth of your love touching the humble and the hungry. Today I want to live as a hungry person filled with the goodness of a merciful God.
